A pale yellow volatile oil obtained from distillation from nutmeg (mace).
Indications: Applied topically, it is a mildly rubefacient in the treatment of chronic inflammatory conditions and to relieve neuralgia and rheumatic pains.
Dosage and Administration: Topically: the oil is applied by rubbing gently to the affected areas until absorbed.
Contraindications: Hypersensitive to the oil.
Side Effects/Adverse Reactions: Excessive doses of essential oils are irritant to the gastro-intestinal tract and may cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. There may be occasional irritation of the urinary tract and aggravation of pre-existing inflammatory conditions. Convulsion may occur. Severe poisoning leads to respiratory failure.
Precautions/Warnings: It may cause sensitisation when applied topically. Care should be taken to avoid blistering.
